October 2015 - Rights Respecting School

Wicklea Academy is currently working towards recognition as a “Rights Respecting School”. This is an award which is given to schools on behalf of UNICEF. In 1989, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted. These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow and fulfil their potential. This will help our pupils become more caring and responsible citizens, both at school, and within the wider community.

As such, on Monday the 12th of October, we held a launch morning, with lots of activities to introduce this to the children. We worked out the differences between what a child WANTS and what a child NEEDS, and we thought about how we can ensure that every child gets what they need. These are the responsibilities that we all have to make sure everyone stays safe, happy and healthy. Every class then made a class charter, agreed upon by everyone, outlining some rights that we have in our class. We also thought about the responsibilities we have in order that this happens.

Please discuss this with your children at home, further helping them understand that having rights and responsibilities is not just for children in schools, but also every single person in the world.
